On one of my many walks this month I’ve spotted a new-to-me plant: Cardamine douglassii. 💜It’s blooming now in PA and is know as the Limestone bittercress or Purple cress. Its growing in a ditch along a neighborhood road and is obviously comfortable in low lying damp spots. It’s a native perennial to North America of the Cardamine family, along with the Toothwort (Cardamine concatenata) which we already have in our Woodland, and several other less showy plants. I think it’s the most similar to the Cuckoo flower (Cardamine pratensis) that I’m always admiring in British spring gardens. I’ll be watching this large patch for some ripe seed to bring home this summer. 💜 #cardaminedouglassii #cardaminepratensis #cardamineconcatenata #purplecress #limestonebittercress #dampgardens #shadegarden #nativeplants #springephemerals #woodlandgarden
